Overview

The 8-day Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and successful routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its gradual ascent and excellent acclimatization profile, it offers trekkers breathtaking views, diverse landscapes, and a higher chance of reaching Uhuru Peak. The trail begins on the western side of the mountain, passing through dense rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts before merging with the Machame Route. The extra day allows for better acclimatization, making it one of the best choices for those aiming for a successful summit.

Day 01 :

Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Elevation: 2,100m to 2,785m
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

The journey begins with a drive to Lemosho Gate, followed by a trek through lush rainforests filled with monkeys and exotic birds. The first campsite, Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree), is set within the forest.

Day 02 :

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: 2,785m to 3,505m
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

The trail ascends steeply out of the rainforest into the heather and moorland zone. You’ll reach the Shira Plateau, a vast volcanic landscape with breathtaking views.

Day 03 :

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 3,505m to 3,840m
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Moorland

A short trek across the plateau takes you to Shira 2 Camp. The day allows for acclimatization and offers stunning views of Kibo Peak.

Day 04 :

Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,840m to 4,630m (Lava Tower) to 3,976m (Barranco Camp)
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

The trek leads to Lava Tower, where you reach the highest point of the day for acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy helps your body adjust to the altitude.

Day 05 :

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,976m to 3,995m
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

The highlight of the day is the famous Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding climb. The trail then winds through valleys and ridges, leading to Karanga Camp.

Day 06 :

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

The trek continues to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, you’ll rest before the midnight ascent to the summit.

Day 07 :

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) then down to 3,068m
Hiking Time: 10-14 hours
Habitat: Arctic to Moorland

The summit attempt begins around midnight. You’ll reach Stella Point (5,739m) before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After enjoying the sunrise, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp for rest.

Day 08 :

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 3,068m to 1,640m
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

The final descent takes you back through the lush rainforest before reaching Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate and celebrate your achievement.
