Overview

The 7-day Umbwe Route is the most challenging and direct route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is known for its steep, relentless ascent through dense rainforest and rocky ridges. Unlike other routes, Umbwe offers fewer crowds and a more remote experience. The extra day for acclimatization increases the chances of a successful summit. This route is best suited for experienced trekkers who are confident in their endurance and ability to handle rapid altitude gain.

Day 01 :

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

Elevation: 1,800m to 2,850m
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

The journey starts at Umbwe Gate, where the trek begins through lush rainforests with towering trees and rich wildlife. The trail is steep and leads to Umbwe Camp, set in a forest clearing.

Day 02 :

Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 2,850m to 3,976m
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

The trek continues up a steep ridge, offering stunning views of the valleys below. The landscape transitions to moorland as you reach Barranco Camp, located in a scenic valley beneath the Great Barranco Wall.

Day 03 :

Acclimatization Day at Barranco Camp

To improve acclimatization, this day is spent at Barranco Camp with a short hike to higher elevations before returning to camp for rest.

Day 04 :

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,976m to 3,995m
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

The day starts with a challenging climb up the Great Barranco Wall, followed by a trek through alpine desert terrain to Karanga Camp.

Day 05 :

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

The final stretch before the summit attempt leads to Barafu Camp, where climbers rest and prepare for the overnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Day 06 :

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) then down to 3,100m
Hiking Time: 12-15 hours
Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest

The summit push begins around midnight, with a steep climb to Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, the descent leads to Mweka Camp.

Day 08 :

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

The final descent takes you back through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate before heading back to your hotel.
